5 Things to Check Before Erasing iPad

Before you restore your iPad to its factory settings make sure you have done the following. (You can follow the link for each item for a short how-to.)

Notability - make sure it's backed up

Quizlet - make sure you've exported your lists

StopMotion - make sure you've exported your videos

iMovie - make sure you've export your video

Photos - make sure you have backed up your photos and videos to Google Photos

Accessing Self-Service

Sometimes your Self-Service will stop working. This could be for different reasons, a disconnection from the server, a wifi glitch, etcetera. However, whenever a problem arises with the app there are several things you can do.

  1. Reset your network settings: Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings and follow the prompts.

  2. Do a hard reset of your device by holding the start button and the home button down simultaneously until the iPad cycles off and back on.

  3. Sign out of Self-Service and back in.

  4. If not of these things work, you can delete the self-service app and wait until it reinstalls itself. (This will usually happen within an hour.)

  5. If self service does not return within an hour, email the help desk at helpdesk@tsdch.org.

Charging Problems

Charging problems most often occur after the operating system needs updating. So, if your iPad isn't charging properly, the first thing to do is to make sure your OS is up-to-date. Go to Settings > General > Software Update, and if it needs updating, do so.

Depending on the size of the update it can take up to 20 minutes to finish the process. Once it's done, test to see if your iPad charges correctly.

Charging problems can also be the result of a faulty cable or charging brick. If your device is not charging correctly, try different cables and chargers. (Remember, though, that your charger needs to be one designed to charge iPads not phones, even iPhones. Those chargers do not provide enough charging power for the iPad.)

If you are still having problems, contact the IT Department at helpdesk@tsdch.org.

Disabled iPad

If you try to enter the wrong passcode into your iPad too many times, your iPad will be disabled. The length of time it is disabled will increase as you keep entering the wrong passcode. Enter the wrong code too many times, and it will be permanently locked.

If your iPad is connected to wifi, there is a chance it can be unlocked remotely. In this case contact the help desk (tech@tsdch.org), and we will do our best to unlock it through the management system.

However, it is more likely that you will have to restore the iPad to its factory settings and reconfigure it. First, you will need your iPad, a computer, and a cable to connect your iPad to the computer. Second, carefully follow these instructions:

  1. On your computer open iTunes (if you have a Mac with the Catalina operating installed, open Finder.)

  2. Plug your cable into the USB port of your computer. (You'll plug the other end into your iPad in Step 4.)

  3. Turn you iPad off.

  4. While holding the Home button down on your iPad, plug the cable into your iPad. Keep holding down the Home button. Soon, the iPad will turn on and open to the Restore screen. (It will be black screen with an image of a computer and a charging cable.)

  5. Once the Restore screen appears, stop holding the Home button. iTunes will recognize your iPad and give you the option to Restore it.

  6. Click the Restore button. iTunes will download the software and install it onto your iPad. (This will take some time, depending on your network speed and the current operating system installed on your iPad, up to 20 minutes.)

  7. Once the iPad is restored, follow the prompts to configure your iPad. (To do this, you will need to know your school credentials. (See Help with Passcodes and Passwords above.)

Here are some instructions, if you need help. Some details will be a little different, but the overall instructions are accurate.

Getting Apps to Work

There are several steps you can take to fix apps that stop working properly. If you have an app that stops working, you can try these things in the order they are listed:

  • Reset your network settings: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings and follow the prompts. Remember, you will need to sign into your wifi again.

  • Do a hard reset of you device: Hold Start button and Home button down simultaneously until the iPad cycles off and back on.

  • Delete and then reinstall the app that is not working. You delete an app by holding your finger on the app icon until the icon starts to wiggle. Then, you tap on the delete option. You can find the app in your Self-Service. (You will need your AD credentials to do this. Don't know what those are? Check in the Getting Help with Passwords section above.) Note: if the Self-Service is not working, you can delete that too. It will come back automatically, usually within an hour.

  • If none of these steps work, contact the IT Department at helpdesk@tsch.org.

Getting Securly to Work

Sometimes you'll try to get to a site or open a file, say in Classroom, and the Securly stops you. If you are trying to get to something appropriate, but you still can't get through, follow this procedure:

  1. Go Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data and tap Clear.

  2. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. (The iPad will cycle off and back on.)

  3. Do a hard reset of the iPad by holding the Start button and the Home button down simultaneously until the iPad cycles off and back on.

If Securly is still giving you problems, please contact the IT Department at helpdesk@tsdch.org.

Help with Passwords and Passcodes

iPad Case/Keyboard issues

If your keyboard isn't working properly, try these troubleshooting step. First, make sure your operating system is up-to-date. Your keyboard is extremely sensitive to iOS updates. Also, do a hard reboot, in which you hold the home button and the start button down together until the iPad cycles off and back on.

You can also check to see if there is an update available for the keyboard software. To find out go to Settings > About > Rugged Combo 2. It will tell you if an updated is available.

If none of that works, do this:

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard > English (US) and make sure you choose 'U.S.' instead of 'Automatic.'

If that doesn't help contact the IT Department at helpdesk@tsdch.org.

SafeShare Videos Not Working

If SafeShare videos stop working for you, try this:

  • For Safari, go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data > Clear

  • For Chrome, open Chrome and go to the three dots in the top right hand corner of the screen, and tap on Settings > Privacy > Clear Browsing Data > Clear Browsing Data (with Browsing History, Cookies,/Site Data, Cached Images and Files checked)

Other students have had difficulty playing assigned because of the wifi protection programs at home. Software like Disney Family Circle can prevent videos from playing on your iPad. If you are having problems, and you have followed the instructions above, check with your family to see if your family has this software. Depending on the software, your family may be able to allow these kinds of videos play.

If these steps don't help, please contact your teacher and then the IT Department at helpdesk@tsdch.org.
